Momotombo - ei vulkanoppleving

Det er sjeldan eg har følt meg meir klønete på fjelltur. Då vi nærma oss toppen på fine Momotombo (den største av dei to på bilete) var det berre så vidt det gjekk an å halde seg på føtene. Vinden tok tak i oss og rista vettet ut av meg og alle andre. Steinane rulla og landskapet var i konstant bevegelse. Til tross for at vulkanen var bratt var utfordringa meir mental enn fysisk. Ikkje det at eg var så himla redd, men det tar på å skulle klamre seg til rullande steinar i ei evighet samstundes som det er ein fordel å bevege seg oppover fjellsida. I tillegg drog vinden med seg ørsmå sandpartiklar som kleba seg til hud og hår, tetta øyregangar og tårekanalar. Hundre meter frå toppen måtte vi difor gje tapt for naturkreftene og snu. Det var trist. Eg har ei litt barnsleg holdning til fjell og synst liksom ikkje eg har vore på tur utan å ha kome på toppen...

Momotombo er uansett ein utruleg vakker vulkan, forma nesten som eit perfekt triangel, og med ei fantastisk utsikt over det måneliknande landskapet mellom Leon og Managua. Den er berre den femte høgste i Nicaragua, men eg trur det er den finaste

Det var dessutan utruleg fint å campe i botnen av vulkanen kvelden før, sjå på stjernorna og pugge Silvio Rodriguez-tekstar til konserten dagen etter. Litt bileter frå ein fantastisk tur saman med Flavio, Rigo, Tiril, Simen og Borgny:

Volcano Momotombo is my favourite volcano. I don't know if it is because I like the ever changing colours of its perfect cone, the physically and mentally challenging hike, or simply because it brings me memories from my childhood. My love and passion for the Nicaraguan outdoors and my life as guide in the Maribios volcanic range began when my brother and I hiked Momotombo with our father at the ages of 9 and 12.

Camping in «el plano de los coyotes», in the bottom of the volcano, is an long-lasting experience and gives you the opportunity to see a close-up of the volcano both at sun-set and sun-rise. If you are lucky you can listen to the coyotes hauling from a distant, ant eaters coming near your tent, find a scorpion inside your shoe or touch the tail of a rattle snake.

If nothing of this occurs though, you are guaranteed a night below a star sprinkled sky, and once a month a full moon appearing behind the majestic volcano

From the summit you'll admire the complete volcanic range which includes El Chonco in the far distant (looking north) and El Hojo in the proximity of Momotombo. The view also includes San Cristobal, the tallest volcano in Nicaragua, Telika with its huge crater and Cerro Negro, the youngest of the volcanoes only 185 years old.
